The story of Nola Darling's simultaneous sexual relationships with three different men is told by her and by her partners and other friends. All three men wanted her to commit solely to them; Nola resists being "owned" by a single partner.

That black and white imagery is something else! Spike Lee captures the human body in ways I didn’t know were possible. Wish this exploration of love had more intimacy. Never had a real grasp on Nola as a character. This has to be one of the most confident debuts. VERY excited about Da 5 Bloods coming to Netflix soon.
You know you're in your 30s when you watch this and lust over the apartment, not the sex.
Love the structure of this movie and how fun it is at parts, don’t love how thin Nola feels as a character or how tacked on her ending is. Can see very real parts of myself as I am in relationships (good parts tho) well-reflected in both Mars and Jamie, even though they are both real pieces of shit. (Again, good parts though. I’m good. Strong too. Good at puzzles)
Some films try so hard to be cool and just aren't. She's Gotta Have It just drips cool from the minute it starts to the very end. As searingly honest, hilarious and lively as it was when it was released in 1986, this film does so many things ahead of its time. It follows the story of one Brooklynite Nola Darling as she simultaneously dates three different men, refusing to commit or to be 'posessed' by one of them. It feels like the Annie Hall of 1980s for me. A feminist, jazzy masterpiece direct from the mind of a young Spike Lee. Beautifully directed, edited and scored and featuring raw but charismatic and memorable performances and unique characters. There are so many great lines that stick in your head and so many truths about love, relationships, men, women and sex told as they are. All cinema fans must watch this gem.

With the caveat that the film fumbles on Nola's sexual assault and its aftermath—Spike's Netflix series seems to exist, in part, to right this particularly wrong—this is one of those debuts where it's thrillingly clear that we're being introduced to a major director. The shots of Brooklyn and its denizens are striking enough on their own, but Spike's willingness to allow Nola to seek pleasure on her own terms is liberating, even when it meets with unwanted consequences. She's out there willing to make mistakes, and so is he, from the jump.
It's always fun watching long time director's first directorial debut.
It's nice knowing how they started out and all but wow did Spike Lee start off with a BANG.
Spike Lee couldn't crawl into the mind of a woman so easily as he was better off crawling into the mind of a male. 3 males, that is. All different and all bad in their own way. What all 3 have in common though, is that they feel the need to control the decisions of the same woman, Nola Darling, who they all happen to be dating.
