Pinhead is trapped in the Pillar of Souls. Fortunately for him it is bought by a young playboy who owns his own nightclub. Pinhead busies himself escaping by getting the playboy to lure victims to his presence so he can use their blood. Once free, he seeks to destroy the puzzle box so he need never return to Hell, but a female reporter is investigating the grisly murders and stands in his way.

Hellraiser III is the rare film which very nearly raises idiotic self-sabotage to heights of delightful enjoyment. Throwing out all meaningful continuity and mythos gained in the first two Hellraiser movies, Hellraiser III brings the pain to earth, here North Carolina standing in for New York City (?), wherein Pinhead is trapped inside a super terrible play-doh version of the end of Poltergeist II, itself trapped within a consignment thrift of bad 90's art, bought by a dude who has got to be the most unpleasant artist-cum-club-owner of the 1990's, which is saying something I am sure. Hellraiser 3 follows Joey an investigative reporter who must send the newly unbound Pinhead and his legions back to Hell.
If this was just another horror flick that is not a part of a franchise it would have worked really well because it has everything you can ask for as a horror fan a decent script, fine actors, and good creature effects. But it's not, as it destroys everything that the previous two movies lived up to, especially with respect to the logic and reasons behind the acts that were performed by the cenobites, it's just an overblown mess.
This movie should have been a psychological horror, as the pillar that J.P. bought…

After watching the documentary for Hell on Earth yesterday (and watching the reconstructed director’s cut of Bloodline), I figured I’d give it a revisit instead of watch a sport I have no interest in. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth: In which Pinhead graces the presence of mere mortals and fucks up a club in grand style (one of my favorite massacre segments ever) and makes a CD Cenobite out of a DJ. This Hellraiser sequel will always be very special to me because it was filmed in my hometown of Greensboro, NC. All those downtown NYC shots are actually downtown Greensboro and proof that movie magic is a totally real thing. I kinda remember when it was being filmed. I didn’t actually get to see it happen because it was filmed late at night and I was still a bit too young to be out that late I guess, but I remember reading all about it in the newspaper. What is this movie even? What are its rules? Why does Pinhead live in some Lower East Side junk store pillar instead of the puzzle box? Why does he need to play with it? Why is there a CD DJ Cenobite? Why are there so many white people dancing in a studio suit's wet'n'wild dream of a down'n'dirty Noo Yawk Citay sort-of-rave decorated with baby doll heads and Christmas lights and dusty S&M dummies? I do love the early '90s faux club kid aesthetic of crop tops and mesh and undershirts tucked into dad jeans like if a GAP model went too hard at a Prodigy show and woke up the next morning wearing a leather dog collar. And some of the Cenobites looked goofy but inventive, like the aforementioned CD slinger or gasoline martini shaker or a camera-head guy (???) who says "that's a wrap!' At least this uninspired sequel-by-committee nonsense is sort of fun?
I love the new cenobites. One of them is a CD-throwing DJ, another has a video camera attached to its face, and the barman makes a killer drink! Hell yeah. Always loved that Motörhead theme too.
A step down from the first two, but it’s not bad. It’s very goofy and cheesy, which works some of the time, but not always. The gore and effects are solid and it’s entertaining enough. The only glaring problem was the continual halting the momentum by adding really slow scenes with nothing but plot exposition. Also, as stupid as these new Cenobites are, I really liked them. Especially the DJ mf who just killed people with CD’s, it’s so stupid but I really love it.
The third sequel, which is already very modernized compared to the first two parts. More story and more gore at the expense of the mysterious, mystical and occult that was known from the two predecessors. „Some“ of the seriousness was also taken away. At least you can see Pinhead more often, which makes up for it somewhat.
